Britain Not Long For The EU

The EU has been on shaky ground since the financial crisis of 2008. Some individuals have even postulated that nations like Italy, Spain or Greece could eventually opt out of the Union.  Mainstream news pundits to play down this likelihood as the current consensus among the elites is that the world will become increasingly more interconnected; the EU simply being a step along in that direction.  However, the spectre that a nation may willingly leave the EU has been raised.  This time though it comes from the British Isle with UKIP performing very well in the latest rounds of elections.

We could very well see the dissolution of the EU come, not from one of the mismanaged countries of the Mediterranean, but from our British cousins north of Europe.  It shouldn't be too surprising when the UK only ever put their foot in the door, they maintained their monetary sovereignty, and their long history of resistance towards Continental Europe. There may be hope for Great Britain yet.

Shanggui and Proscriptions - Extra-Judicial Punishment

One thing I like about blogs are the comments that often follow. Some of the blogs with a lot of followers can generate a fair number of comments, many of them insightful, many of them not so much.  In regards to comments that fall in the latter category the one that elicits the most eye rolls from me is the claim that the United States is the most corrupt country on the earth. The United States has undoubtedly seen a decline in regards to our civil liberties and corruption, but I can think of many governments that are far more corrupt than the US; Venezuela anyone? 

Progressive Societies Are Not Really All That Liberal

Iceland has a pretty progressive society by all accounts yet they are planning a pretty illiberal law.  Color me unsurprised, progressive societies are terribly illiberal by virtue of the tenant equalism. You can't have a free society when everyone is supposed to be the same not only under the law, which is a tenant of real liberalism, but economically and socially as well. Because in a free society some individuals are going to do better than others and any attempt to try and erase this reality requires the dismantling of a free society.
